John Muir Cycleway

The John Muir Cycleway stretches 133 miles from Helensburgh to Dunbar, traversing Scotland laterally from coast to coast. It’s a deliberately varied route, combining historic built-up spaces like Edinburgh and Bo’ness with rides past sightseeing spots and long stretches along Scotland’s coastline and into the wilderness. The whole point is to live up to the ambitions of the trail’s namesake, John Muir, a famous Dunbar-born conservationist who believed in the intense importance of getting out into nature — and doing so at an approachable pace to really enjoy what’s around you.

In pursuit of that aim, the trail is particularly well-waymarked and easy to ride. It explores the Scottish heartland along paved, gravel and dirt tracks, with big views to enjoy and a handful of bumpy, narrow and staired sections that should keep mountain bikers entertained. These more technical legs of the trail can be avoided on optional detours that favour flatter surfaces — perfect for touring bikes or family rides.

Although it maintains a remote, countryside character, the John Muir Way never strays too far from facilities. It’s well-serviced by local bus routes if you need to cut a day’s ride short. All in all, the John Muir Way is the perfect choice for an approachable long-distance ride with loads to see.

Which Bike?

A gravel or hybrid bike will be ideal for the John Muir Cycleway, and should handle the lumpier sections if you don't plan to skip them via the cycling braids.
